Reviewing the Situation – 1 Peter 1:1-9

Read the headlines. Watch the news. Listen to the radio. Talk to your friends. Talk to your family. It won’t take long for the subject of evil doers and evil ways to come into the discourse. We live in a fallen world full of fallen people who do despicable things for detestable reasons. And should the discussion turn to the path which the Christian should walk in this fallen world, the tone can be discouraging, hopeless, and at times even fearful.

That is where the book of 1st Peter steps in. In it we find a living hope and practical instruction on how to live a Godly life in an un-Godly world. We find the Living Rock of our salvation on which we can firmly stand when the world around us is crumbling. In the decadent days in which we live, Peter shows us not only how to live holy lives in the face of moral depravity, but also how to lift others out of the pit of destruction that is devouring them. Jesus said, “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart – I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33) Peter takes this promise and provides the insight into how the overcoming life of our Lord can be realized in our contemporary world and in our daily lives.

The Agape Life Bible Study group of Brenham’s First Baptist Church began a series of lessons from the book of 1st Peter on Sunday, January 5. The title of the series is Hunger for Holiness: Living Pure in an Impure World. This is the first lesson in that series and in it we lay out the situation of the people to whom Peter is writing. We also look at how his words of encouragement for them can apply to us as well.

Why Is Suffering a Part of Life? – Job 7:1-21 –Part 2

Job lost it all – family, business, health, property – and with all of that he lost all hope. In the 7th Chapter of Job he comes out swinging. He has nothing left to lose so he lays it all on the line before God. His entire life seems futile. He can’t find rest in his sleep. His misery haunts him night and day. The questions about the meaning and purpose of it all rage in his mind to the point where he feels he would be better off dead.

As we go through periods of suffering – times when we experience the worst that life can throw at us – we, too, find ourselves asking questions: Why me, Lord? Why do these things always happen to me? What have I done to deserve this kind of abuse? Are You even there, Lord? While it is possible to know some of the reasons for the suffering, that doesn’t calm the silent storm raging within us. The questions are valid as we see in the life of Job, but finding the answers should not be the ultimate goal. Our hope is not in finding the answers – our hope is in finding Him, Jesus Christ, the Suffering Servant. In Him we gain understanding, love, strength, and the hope to endure and even thrive in the midst of the suffering. Our hope is built on nothing less than Jesus’ blood and righteousness.

I Wish I’d Never Been Born – Job 2:1-10; 3:1-26

Job had been dealt blow after blow – losing his family, servants, livestock, property, income, future prospects, respect, reputation, health, and spousal support.  And yet in Job 2:10 we read that Job’s response to to all of this was,  “Shall we indeed accept good from God, and shall we not accept adversity?”  And then Job’s ultimate response is that in all this Job did not sin. 

Nevertheless, the pain of Satan’s attacks was very real and could not be ignored or dismissed easily.  In Job 3 we come to understand just a bit of that pain as Job expresses the deep depression that has resulted from the these attacks.  He wishes he had never been born.  He wants the day of his birth removed from the calendar.  He laments that he would be better off dead.  

We see this same expression of longing for death in Moses, Elijah, Jonah, Jeremiah, and David.  In each of these giants of the faith there were times of deep distress that brought them to this point.  Job said I have no peace, no quietness; I have no rest – only turmoil. (Job 2:26)  Fortunately, Jesus promised in John 14:27, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”

Overcoming Temptation

Overcoming Temptation – James 1:13-18

We know what is right and we know what is wrong. We want to do what is right but we are constantly tempted to do what is wrong. Paul describes this dilemma in Romans 7 and it is all too familiar a struggle in our daily lives. James begins his letter by emphasizing our response to the trials we face. In verse 13 James pivots to explore the nature of temptation.

God tests us, but He does not tempt us. We need to have a clear concept of how we are tempted so that we don’t fall into the traps set by Satan and so that we don’t lightly pass over our sin as just part of the human experience. Satan may set the trap, but we are too easily fooled because we fail to see how he is using our own desires to bait the trap.

On the other hand, God – the Creator of all that is and the One Who created us as His prized possession – offers us truth and light to counteract Satan’s darkness and lies. And so we pray as Jesus taught His disciples to pray, “Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.”

He’s With Us Through This Whole Thing

Today marks 9 months since my prostate cancer surgery. I had my 9-month visit with my doctor this week and my blood work has remained unchanged ever since the surgery. There is no detectable PSA and consequently no detectable cancer cells. He was thrilled to see me as he has been at every checkup. He told me again how happy he was with the results and I flippantly asked, “What did you expect?” He replied, “I fully expected you to be on radiation at this point as well as hormone therapy. You really should not be doing this well.” He said that when he saw the pathology report and when he saw the MRI and then when the report came back from M.D. Anderson that showed my entire prostate had been taken over by the cancer and that it had taken over the seminal vesicles and that it was in the margins (the marginal tissue of the prostate next to the surrounding tissues) and that it had moved into the lymph nodes – well he figured I would be struggling. Then he looked me in the eye and said that “the Lord was definitely by my side throughout this whole thing.” All I can say is AMEN.


But here’s the even greater truth – even if none of this good news had come, the Lord would still have been by my side through this whole thing. The three boys in the fiery furnace knew that God was able to deliver them and even told the king that, but then they said that if God didn’t deliver them they would still worship Him and Him alone. And who showed up in the midst of the fiery furnace? Jesus showed up – He was with them throughout that whole thing. God didn’t promise us deliverance from the the trials and troubles of this life. In fact, he promised us that they would come. But He also said that He would be with us throughout this whole thing.

“And, lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:20)
