The Asbury Connection ~ Revival of God’s People
Throughout history there have been times of revival among God’s people – times when the Spirit of God moved in a way that could only be explained as the work of God. Since the birth of the church there have been numerous times when the Spirit moved His bride, the church, to leave her sin behind and return once again to Him.
In the early to mid-1700’s there was one such movement of God that has since been named The Great Awakening. It began in Europe and in the Colonies of the New world that we now know as the United States. In the Americas it swept through the colonies, uniting them in purpose and in faith. Many great things came about as a result of the Great Awakening in America, but perhaps the most significant is the United States itself.
Skip ahead almost 3 centuries and we find the Spirit moving on the campus of Asbury University. It’s not the first time that Asbury has found itself in a revival experience. In fact, it has happened 9 times since the founding of the college in 1890. And the roots of those revivals go back to the Great Awakening in which John Wesley was awakened by the Spirit of Christ. This Bible study was presented to the Agape Life Bible Study Class of the First Baptist Church in Brenham, Texas, on Sunday, February 19, 2023. Where Happens When We Die? – Part One
This discussion began with questions about the meaning of 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 in which Paul describes what will happen to those who die before Jesus returns. Since he was addressing Christians, his thoughts centered around the life of the Christian after death. Obviously, what happens when we die is a question that would be answered differently for the believer and the nonbeliever. But like Paul, we are looking at the Christians expectations and hopes for the future.
The fact is that God created a perfect world and placed in it perfect human beings. The problem was that those human beings sinned and God‘s perfect world was polluted by sin. So they were banished from the garden in which he had placed them, and since that time we have lived with a sinful nature in a fallen world.
It was only when Jesus paid the price for our sin that we found the final solution to our problem. And the final solution is wonderful. Because of what Christ did for us on the cross, and because he rose again as the first fruits of the resurrection, we also can look forward to the hope of resurrection.
When we die, we go to be with Jesus, but that presence with Christ is separated from our earthly bodies. When Jesus returns, our resurrected bodies will reunite with our spirit and soul, and we will dwell in the new earth – the new garden – that will come at the end of time. So what will happen when we die? It’s all good. . . . for the ones who believe.

One Solitary Life
As we enter into the Advent Season – joyfully celebrating the coming of our Messiah – we should never forget what Jesus has done for us in His coming. Even from infancy He was destined to die for our sins. Even from infancy He was destined to change the way mere mortals could gain access to God. Even from infancy He was destined to change the world.
He was born in an obscure village
The son of a simple peasant woman.
He grew up in another small town
And worked with his father in a carpenter shop until He was thirty.
And then for three years he was what we might call a traveling preacher.
He never owned a home – never married and never had a family.
He never wrote a book. He never held political office.
He never went to college and never set foot inside a big city.
He walked wherever He went
And He never traveled more than 200 miles from the place he was born.
He never did one of the things that usually accompany greatness.
While still a young man the tide of public opinion turned against Him.
Most of His friends deserted Him; one denied even knowing Him
And One betrayed Him and turned Him over to His enemies.
He went through the mockery of a trial
And was nailed to a cross between two thieves.
While He was dying His executioners gambled for His only possession – His robe.
When He was dead he was taken from the cross
And laid in a borrowed grave.
Almost twenty centuries have since come and gone
And today this man is the centerpiece of the human race.
I think I am well with in the mark when I say
That all the armies that ever marched –
All the navies that ever sailed –
All the parliaments that have ever sat and
All the kings that have ever reigned –
All put together have not affected the life of man here upon this earth
As powerfully as has that one solitary life.
And I can definitely add that no one has affected my life as powerfully as has that One Solitary Life.
I developed this version of the essay “One Solitary Life” by Dr James Allan Francis by using his words and other phrases that I have heard and used in stating the significance of Jesus Christ. It is a powerful statement that is true in its content and will strike true in the heart of anyone who considers it with an open mind and searching soul.
